Micro Mayfly, Flashback
A great pattern to throw when the blue wing olives are hatching in the #18-22 size range. This nymph fishes very well in both nymph rig and dry-dropper setups when hatches are present. Tied in olive brown on a straight nymph hook.
As the name suggests, this is a 'micro' pattern. Mayflies are seen in many different sizes and colors, but during the fall, winter, and spring many times mayflies are observed to be just as small as your local midges. When this is the case, size is king, and having a mayfly pattern in the right size can be the difference between a 2-fish and 20-fish day. For this reason, we choose not to worry too much about subtle color differences with this fly and stick to a staple in olive brown and let the size do the heavy lifting.
